Experimental Set up:
The engine, which has been used in the operation of this experiment, was naturally aspirated. It was a direct injection (DI) diesel engine. It has water cooling system. The experiment was carried out at different speeds ranging from 500rpm to 900rpm (It has been found that maximum load is obtained at 900rpm. After this speed if speed is further increased then the load exceeds the maximum allowable load of this engine). The detailed specification of the engine will be given later.

There were two types of loading systems in this engine. One is mechanical loading system and the other one is electrical loading system. The mechanical loading is a drum-brake loading system. The electrical loading system is directly connected with an eddy current dynamometer. This experiment was carried out under both of these two systems of loadings.

The exhaust gas temperature was measured by a thermometer at a distance of 52.8 cm from the exhaust port.



An inclined water tube manometer was used to measure the air pressure. The manometer was connected to the air box (drum).The air box was connected to the suction port by a hose pipe. The orifice diameter of the air box was 1.5 cm.

The fuel consumption was measured by a burette attached to the engine fuel tank. A stopwatch was used to measure the fuel consumption time for every 10 cc of fuel.

And a gas analyzer was used to measure the exhaust gas emission. Details of description of the gas analyzer will be given later.


Test procedures:

The engine was first run at 500 rpm for about 30 minutes with diesel fuel so that the engine becomes sufficiently warm up. The engine was then run at fixed speeds of 500rpm, 600rpm, 700rpm, 800rpm, and 900rpm without EGR. Each time corresponding data of exhaust gas temperature, cooling water temperature, emission, air pressure, time for fuel consumption were measured and noted.
