Mechanism of Dyeing With Sulphur Black:
There is Sulphur linkage in the molecule of Sulphur dye. It is not soluble in water. But it is soluble in Na2S (reducing agent). Na2CO3 can also be added. The sodium sulphide breaks the Sulphur linkage and converts the molecules into a smaller part which is soluble in water and also can enter inside the cellulose.
Dye-S-S-Dye Dye-SH + Dye-SH
-SH is called thiol. This thiol having –SH group is sucked by the fibres
as a soluble form. This is called the leuco form. In the presence of air,
the dye is oxidized and converted into insoluble form and stays on the fibre.
