What is Solid Particle Pyrolysis?

The char generally is a carbon rich solid with only minor fractions of hydrogen and heteroatom present in the fuel or waste.the overall solid particle pyrolysis is endothermic.

Pyrolysis occurs with heating in the absence of oxygen or air to produce a mixture of solid char, condensable liquids and gasses. It can be presented by the following equation.

CaHbOc + Heat ---------> H2O + CO2 + H2 + CO + CH4 + C2H6 +
CH2O +.………...…+ Tar + Char


The three classes of products of pyrolysis, then, are volatiles, tar and char. The volatiles may or may not be condensable at ambient condition; however, in all practical combustion systems these component remains in the gas phase. The tar is generally a heavy hydrocarbon substance with an atomic H/C ratio > 1.0.

This equation presents a summery of pyrolysis; however, it makes fundamental chemical process involved. Pyrolysis involves both chemical and physical changes. The physical changes include the potential for particle shrinkage. Further, pyrolysis changes the thermodynamic and transport properties of the fuel particles resulting in a material that is more isolative.
